Why the Same Appliance Costs 4x More in Some States Than Others

Run a 1,500-watt space heater two hours a day in Nevada and it costs about $144 a year. Run the exact same heater, the exact same way, in Hawaii, and it costs $577. Same appliance. Same usage. Four times the cost. That gap has nothing to do with the heater and everything to do with what your state charges per kilowatt-hour, which is why HomePilot’s cost calculators now let you plug in your state instead of guessing at one flat national number.

Why One National Number Never Worked

Most appliance cost calculators use a single U.S. average rate and call it done. The problem: that average, 18.34 cents per kWh as of September 2026, hides a huge spread. Nevada residents pay around 13.11 cents per kWh. Hawaii residents pay 52.72 cents, over four times as much, mostly because Hawaii’s grid is isolated and still runs heavily on imported fuel. States with abundant hydro, wind, or natural gas (Nevada, Utah, Louisiana) sit well below the national average, while states with older grids and higher demand (California, New York, most of New England) sit well above it.

A calculator that ignores this isn’t wrong for everyone, it’s just wrong for most people.

What the Same Heater Costs, State by State

Same 1,500-watt heater, same two hours a day, 365 days a year. Only the state changes.

StateRate (per kWh)Annual Cost
Nevada13.11¢$144
Utah13.37¢$146
Louisiana13.49¢$148
U.S. average18.34¢$201
New York29.49¢$323
Massachusetts29.61¢$324
California34.74¢$380
Hawaii52.72¢$577

That’s not a rounding error. It’s the difference between a heater that costs $12 a month and one that costs $48 a month, for identical usage.

How to Get Your Actual Number

  1. Open the Appliance Running Cost Calculator or the LED Bulb Savings Calculator.
  2. Enter the appliance’s wattage and how many hours a day you actually use it.
  3. Pick your state from the dropdown. It auto-fills a current average rate for you.
  4. Have a recent utility bill handy? Type your exact rate into the field instead, since your specific utility can run higher or lower than your state’s average.
  5. Read your daily, monthly, and yearly cost instantly, no signup, no email wall.

The same state-aware upgrade went into the LED Bulb Savings Calculator too, since swapping a 60-watt bulb for its LED equivalent saves a very different amount in Hawaii than it does in Louisiana, even though the bulb itself is identical.

Worth Knowing Before You Trust the Number

State averages are a starting point, not a guarantee. Utilities within the same state can differ, and delivery or distribution charges on your bill aren’t part of the generation rate used here. For the most accurate result, pull the rate straight off a recent bill instead of relying on the state default, the calculator makes that just as easy.
