What Actually Matters When Comparing Thermostats
- C-wire requirement is the first filter, not the last. Older homes often lack one, but a Power Extender Kit or battery power usually solves it. Confirm which approach a model uses before buying, since some installs are far easier than others.
- Ecosystem lock-in lasts until you replace the thermostat. The Amazon Smart Thermostat only talks to Alexa and Ring. If a household runs on Google Home or Apple HomeKit, that one is off the table regardless of price.
- Room sensors fix the one-thermostat-one-temperature problem. A thermostat in a hallway reads hallway temperature, not bedroom temperature. Ecobee includes one; Nest and most budget models sell them separately or not at all.
- Auto-learning is a Nest-specific feature, not an industry standard. Most competitors rely on manual or app-built schedules instead, equally effective once set up, just less hands-off.
