Not long ago, a “robot vacuum” meant one thing: a disc that bumped around your living room. At IFA 2026 in Berlin this month, that category quietly split into five different tools, and figuring out which one you actually need matters more than picking a brand.
The Category Fractured on Purpose
Dreame showed off a roller-mop hybrid with a steam pretreatment step, designed to loosen dried-on stains before the roller ever touches the floor, which matters a lot if you have tiled or hard-vinyl kitchen flooring. Ecovacs used the show to launch its latest vacuum-mop hybrid alongside a completely separate product: a dedicated window-cleaning robot. Roborock went even further, showing a robot lawnmower, a pool-cleaning bot, and a stair-climbing vacuum, none of which do the same job as a standard living-room robot.
That’s the real trend here: brands have stopped trying to build one robot that does everything adequately, and started building several robots that each do one thing well.
What This Means When You’re Shopping
The old question was “which robot vacuum should I buy?” The better question now is “which chore am I actually trying to get rid of?” A steam-mop hybrid solves a different problem than a window robot, which solves a different problem than a pool skimmer. Buying the wrong one because it had the highest star rating is an easy way to spend a few hundred dollars on a gadget that never leaves its dock.
- Hard floors with stuck-on grime (kitchens, entryways) → look for steam-pretreatment roller mops rather than standard spinning mop pads.
- Multi-story homes → stair-climbing models are still a niche, premium category, and worth it only if stairs are a daily obstacle.
- Large lawns → robot mowers have matured past the wire-boundary era and increasingly use camera or GPS-based mapping.
- Everyone else → a standard vacuum-mop hybrid still covers 90% of households; don’t upgrade to a specialty bot until you’ve confirmed the specific chore is actually a recurring pain point.
None of the specialty models announced at IFA 2026 have confirmed pricing or release dates outside their home markets yet, so treat this as a preview of where the category is heading rather than a shopping list for this week. But if you’re about to buy a robot vacuum, it’s worth waiting to see which of these specialized categories actually reaches your region before settling for a general-purpose model that half-solves your specific problem.
